SPEECH/LANGUAGE THERAPY
 
Speech/Language therapy is a related service for students at Little Flower who exhibit speech and or language deficits that interfere with the student’s education. Services are mandated on a Childs IEP and approved of by the Committee on Special Education.    Students are seen individually and or in groups. Areas of weakness often include:
 
PHONOLOGY/ARTICULATION- the ability to manipulate the mouth to make letter sounds. (Critical to beginning reading success.)
 
AUDITORY PROCESSING- the ability to hear what is being said and the ability to understand it.
 
RECEPTIVE LANGUAGE- the development of age appropriate skills to understand language.
 
EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE- the development of age appropriate skills to use language.
 
FLUENCY- the ability to communicate freely without disruptions.
 
VOICE- a vocal disorder usually involves one of the following three characteristics of voice production: Quality (hoarse or nasal) Pitch (too high or too low) or Intensity (softness/loudness).
 
PRAGMATICS- refers to how language is used in social situations.
